Isnt it wonderful when you are on a flight and a flight attendant does something out of the ordinary when its a special occasion? This happened to me recently on a flight from Canberra to Melbourne with Qantas Airways. The special occasion was that I was flying from Canberra to Melbourne to take the new Jetstar Boeing 787 from Melbourne to the Gold Coast – yes I am an aviation geek

The aircraft I was flying from Canberra on was an 11 year old Boeing 737-838. Registered VH-VXJ and named after the South Australian outback Opal mining city of Coober Pedy. The aircraft was delivered to Qantas in June 2002, and although she may have been almost middle aged in aircraft years, this bird was immaculate both inside and out.

For this short, 1 hour, mid morning sector, I was trying out the airlines Economy Class. Qantas, being a full service carrier, offers each passenger entertainment, a baggage allowance and a meal and all those extras the LCC’s charge for, at no extra cost. This particular aircraft, however, was not AVOD equipped, but entertainment, the morning news, was played through drop down screens throughout the cabin.

Being a mid morning flight, departing at 10am the meal service was only a refreshment or snack service and todays snack was a Moorish Muesli biscuit (cookie) and a small bottle of Mount Franklin spring water, with tea and coffee also offered. The biscuit was surprisingly nice and quite ‘More-ish’ 😉

I had just finished my Moorish Muesli biscuit when a flight attendant from Business Class came down the aisle with a wine glass, a piccolo of Grant Burge Australian Sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonay with a bag of Santos Almond and Rice Crackers and said “This is for you, I hear its a special occasion!” The sparkling wine was lovely and was a great first drink, even if a little early, of the day.

I quite enjoyed this short economy sector, the crew were great, the aircraft clean, the snack sufficient and the the little extra was something wonderful on that special day 🙂 Next stop… The Qantas Club…
